New Yorkers can be notoriously hard to excite, but when singer/songwriter Claude Kelly learned that one of his songs ended up in the vocal chords of Michael Jackson, this Lower East Side native lost a little bit of his Big Apple cool.
"I was literally shaking," said Kelly.
Kelly's ascent from talented toddler to writing songs for Akon and Whitney Houston happened quicker than, well, a New York minute.
Growing up, the son of Jamaican immigrants heard lots of reggae, but soaked up the r&b and hip-hop of the 90s. He sang before he could talk, began playing the piano at 2- and-a-half and by middle school mastered the flute. After high school, Kelly attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and after graduation in 2002 returned to Manhattan.
Through networking and word of mouth, Kelly met as many producers as he could, and by 2002 had written a song that ended up a compilation by the Japanese clothing line A Bathing Ape.
"It was a lucky break," he said. "It boosted my confidence." With more hustling and flowing, Kelly got his second big break: Daddy's Little Girl" from Frankie J's 2006 album Priceless. Though it didn't chart well, he said, watching his song go from recording to mixing to mastering to music video was the confirmation that he needed to press on.
Kellys work so impressed Akon that in late 2007 the Senegalese singer suggested Kelly write to some of his music.
"I wrote the songs and hated them," he said. Apparently he was the only one; all three got placed, one of which was Forgive Me, by Leona Lewis. "Hold My Hand," another, will be featured on upcoming albums by Michael Jackson and Akon. At present, he's working with Whitney Houston. "It's incredible," he said. "It's a blessing."
Kelly, who said his specialties are crafting melodies and stories, said he wants to work with rock and country musicians too. "I don't want to just be known for r&b. I want to write songs that anybody of any age, any country can sing along to. Got to think global man!"

As a child, DeLuna moved to the Dominican Republic, where she spent her time listening to Aretha Franklin and became interested in becoming a singer. At the age of 12, Kat was invited by the 'Queen of Merengue', Milly Quezada, to sing with her on stage. In her freshman year of high school, she responded to an audition in The Village Voice and was accepted into an all-Latina, Hip Hop/R&B group called Swallower. In April 2004, she opened for J Records musician Cassidy as part of Swallower. Kat continued to pursue her dream of becoming a solo artist and at age of 15, she entered a Coca-Cola sponsored karaoke competition. Her version of "I Will Always Love You" won the competition.[2] After the competition, Cuban salsa singer Rey Ruiz advised Kat to start writing her own music.[2] Kat DeLuna signed a contract with the production label, Global Music Brand (GMB). According to a brief interview she granted on HaitiXchange.com, she stated that she first met Tyrone when she was 14 years old, who was then scouting for talent. Kat was finally picked up by Epic Records and she is currently under both labels. She is managed by Damon Degraff and Greg Maurice of Cape Town Management. Her debut album, 9 Lives, produced by hitmaker RedOne, and written by Grammy nominated songwriter Jane't Sewell-Ulepic, was released on August 7, 2007. Its peak position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums was #58 on August 25,2007.[3]
In July 2008 Kat Deluna stated via a MySpace video that she is back in the studio working on her second studio album which is yet to be titled.[4] She premiered a new song called "Calling You", specifying that it was only an exclusive single and not a single from her second album. She premiered the song on her MySpace page [5] and her website [6]. Dawn Richard, Danity Kane member, is confirmed to be writing for Kat DeLuna's upcoming album. Kat has filmed the video for her third worldwide single "In The End," which is only being released in Europe.
On September 11, 2008, Kat won two Flemish TMF Awards in the categories Best Urban and Best New Artist. She also recorded with Akon on the official released remix to his single "Right Now (Na Na Na)," which can be heard on her official Myspace profile. In 2008 Kat also recorded a duet with Swedish singer/songwriter Darin, the track "Breathing Your Love", produced by RedOne which will appear on Darin's album "Flashback". In September 2008, Kat DeLuna and Epic Records decided to part ways. It is rumored that Kat is in talks to sign with Universal Music Group.
